While the mule deer and the whitetail deer are considered cousins, hunting a whitetail deer can be very different from hunting a mule deer. One of the more obvious factors is the difference of terrain: whitetail hunting often happens in closer quarters in wooded or forested areas, mule deer can often be found in more open, wide open spaces.

If you’ve ever hunted whitetails, it can be a real adjustment. One of the adjustments a hunter may have to do is to change tactics in the hunt. Where a hunter may have gotten used to utilizing a blind or a stand, and waiting for the deer to cross their paths, hunting mule deer requires that you are able to successfully scout for their presence, and then stalk them, in order to have a good hunt.

The first order of business is to prepare the equipment you will need for scouting, or glassing. I would advise a good pair of binoculars in the 8 or 10 power ranges as a minimum, as well as a quality spotting scope. The right technique for glassing is to first use the binoculars carefully, checking open spaces from a good vantage point early in the day. Then do another scan with your binoculars just to make sure you didn’t miss any obvious does and bucks.

Then use the spotting scope, searching for bits of a deer hidden by grassy fields and cover. It may require adjusting some thinking in order to not seek for a whole deer, and instead to be searching for the parts of a deer that may not be hidden in cover. This will take some learning, but it can be learned, and you will find it easier to spot hidden dear as you grow in experience and skill.

Remember to take note of every deer you spot with your binoculars; you will want this list for the next part of the hunt – stalking deer. When stalking mule deer, one has to remember that you do not need to get too close to your deer to take the shot. Again, given the terrain, you will be able to take longer shots, which is ideal because coming too close to a mule deer can startle it and cause it to run. Sometimes you will be able to move into a good position for a clear shot, but at times you may need to wait.

Even a veteran whitetail deer hunter can find some difficulty learning to hunt a mule deer, but the basic principles of patience and perseverance are the same. Master the skills you need, cultivate patience, and keep at it, and you will find yourself enjoying greater successes when hunting mule deer.

Mule deer can be a challenge for any hunter. It is much larger compared to whitetail deer, but is still very easy to spook, which requires that a hunter be very careful when stalking them. In addition to this, mule deer often reside in difficult terrain, which adds to the difficulty in hunting these animals.
Research: as with any animal, one of the most important things a hunter has to do is to do his research. Know everything you can about mule deer, paying careful attention to anything that can give you an advantage. Aside from hitting the books, another way to do this is to get in touch with veteran mule deer hunters, who can give specific advice and strategies for hunting mule deer.

Scouting: related to Research, this involves actually going to the area you will be hunting at to familiarize yourself with it. If you have the time to do so, take note of watering holes, paths, and good areas to set up a blind or tree-stand. You may also want to speak with any locals familiar with the mule deer of the area; they can be very valuable in providing specific locations and habits of local mule deer.

Equipment: one of the most important tools a bow-hunter can have, aside from his bow, is a good set of binoculars. Mule deer can be difficult to spot, partly because of the terrain where they reside. In addition, a good rangefinder can also make the difference between a shot that takes a mule deer down, and one that lets it get away. You may also want to consider a fawn call, which could stop a deer from racing away – be careful when using one, however, as a deer can also be spooked if you overuse a fawn call.

Practice: as previously mentioned, mule deer can be found in difficult terrain – mainly mountainous areas. One of the mistakes novice mule deer bow-hunters make is that they do not realize the difference a steep angle can make, and are unable to correct their aim. Take the time to practice shooting at steep angles, so that you are prepared to take steep uphill or downhill shots to take down that mule deer.

Keep Fit: this is another very important aspect to consider when choosing to bow hunt mule deer. Again, the areas where they are found in have difficult terrain, and maintaining good physical health and building up your endurance is important, more so if you choose to hunt them at higher elevations. I’m sure you would hate to finally find your trophy mule deer, but be unable to draw your bow, or be shaking too hard because of exhaustion.

Hello and welcome to an avid hunter’s first Muley harvest.
My October Mule Deer Hunt was a success. Marc and I scouted two Regions in British Columbia, Canada ending up in the Thompson Region 3 where I harvested a beauty little 3×3.
Transportation was provided by www.youtube.com/user/Mboutdoor…a.k.a Marc.
We had an excellent trip dispite the lack of big Bucks and the stuggle for over a week to harvest a nice Mule Deer.
We were fortunate to have many great encounters on this excursion including Grizzly Bears in the Caribou Region 5, and Big Horn Sheep in the Thompson Region 3.
With strutting Grouse in full display and beautiful scenery to no apparent end…this successful Muley harvest will be one of ma best memories eva!
