Elk, also known as wapiti are one of the largest species of deer in the world; only moose are larger. A male elk can have antlers that reach over a meter above its head, with the main beam reaching up to 150 cm long. This allows the elk to tower over most other animals where it ranges. Every year, they shed these large antlers, usually around March, though they begin to grow back in May, in time for the late-summer breeding season.

Early summer finds the elk migrating to high mountain pastures, where they graze in preparation to the rut. It is here that female elk give birth, with each cow giving birth to a single calf. When a cow does give birth, it often separates itself from the herd to take care of her calf, until the calf is large enough to escape predation.In the late summer, male elk can clash violently for dominance over the herds, and the bugle calls of bull elk can fill the mountainous woodlands they call home. Bull elk can become aggressive against other bulls at this time, though challenges can be won simply by a lesser elk conceding to a larger, more powerful animal.

If the challenge should come to blows, elk engage in antler wrestling, which can lead to serious injury for one or both of combatants. As with their relatives the deer, elk with larger antlers often win these contests, allowing them to collect larger groups of females for breeding. A male with a harem will defend his group of females from predators, and from other bulls. These bulls rarely feed, and a successful male bull may lose up to 20 percent of his mass.

Upon the arrival of winter, elk separate into herds by gender, with male and female elk gathering into large separate groups. They will often move into lower wooded slopes or even dense woods as temperatures drop. It is at this time that elk shed their antlers, and bull elk can gather together without danger of them clashing.

Elk are herbivorous ruminants with four-chambered stomachs. Like deer, they are able to feed on a wide range of vegetation, though they primarily graze like cattle, whereas deer primarily browse. Most of their feeding is done in the mornings and evenings, and in between feedings they seek sheltered locations to safely digest their food. Elk are able to consume up to twenty pounds of vegetation daily, and can grow to weigh from 300 to 1,100 pounds.

Elk in captivity can live up to twenty years, though in the wild, elk usually live from eight years, which is usually the peak of heir lives, up to twelve years.

This was our D16 & G13 Deer Hunt Opener in San Diego 2008. Rick (Westy) and I camped at Lake Henshaw Campground and hunted nearby. RIck got a doe Saturday night. I saw one spike and several does but no legal bucks.

One deer some other hunters in camp were skinning had been found with a cougar having eaten part of it.
