Hi Steve - The secret of getting into range for a bow-hunter is to be in a place that is already in range for a "kill shot" when the big boy passes. It sounds like you have been doing some observation of the target buck so the next step I would take is to consider the daily travel path area of your buck then find a good spot within that general path for a accurate shot and set up a blind or stand. Next I would try to increase the chances that my target will take the path I have chosen by broadcasting a bit of corn or peanuts (unsalted plain roasted peanuts or even peanut butter works exceptionally well), as long as some baiting or seeding is allowed where you hunt. This should be placed very sparingly across the general area and heavily in your "kill zone." This should greatly increase the odds that the big buck you are after will pass through and linger a bit in the area you have set-up for your shot. For more free tips you can sign up to my free deer hunting course here - Deer Hunting Secrets.

Thanks for this web-page. This is by far the best thing I have found on the internet for learning how to make deer calls and deer hunts actually work.

This was great! Do you have any tips on bringing GIANT Whitetail bucks into range for a bow? Iv been seeing this big buck, but I cant seem to get him in range. If I wait much longer, itll be gun season and I might not have a chance...

i see all these people tellin you to use a .270,it will suffice but if you wanna eat the deer, then dont use a .270 it will tear the meat up. trust me ive made that mistake.i like the 30-06. it will get the job done and still be edible.
References :
exp.

I wouldn't buy anything yet.
If it is your first hunt, borrow a rifle from a buddy/relative.
Are you an experienced shooter? How big/strong are you? What are YOU comfortable shooting/handling? Where/how do you hunt?

Most states don't allow you to hunt deer with less than a .243, which will take down a deer in the right situation. A 30.06 will too, but might dislocate your shoulder if you aren't careful.

MY suggestion, and take it for what it's worth, borrow first. If you REALLY want to buy, a .270 is a great start.

Be smart with your money, figure out what works for you & you will enjoy the hunt much more!!!

Good luck & take a safety course if you are a beginner.
References :
Like several have said. There isn't just one answer.

If you're hunting open land, I would suggest something like a Remington 700 in .270 or .308

If you're a hunting heavily forested area or hill country where shooting will be limited to 200 yards or less. You might consider a Marlin Model 336 30-30

Here are a few links to elk/mule deer hunting in Oregon.
get a call, the elk will come to a well produced bugle, I have watched it on TV many many times, but never had the pleasure of an elk hunt (mostly because of finances). ELK IS A VERY TASTY MEAT THOUGH, and I would rather eat it than deer.
Good Luck
References :
http://www.wogameandfish.com/hunting/elk-hunting/

Tommy said it right-
Depends on what kind of area you will hunt in. A short carbine with a fair scope for the brushy area, and a bolt action with a good scope for the open area.

Back when I hunted deer (quit in '82) I had (still have) a Remington mod. 742 in 30.06 with a Bushnell 3x9 that I used in the woods. But out in the clear cuts I used a Golden Eagle 30.06 mod 7000 with a fancy scope that had a range finder and bullet drop compensator. The range was 100-875 yards. Don't know why I bought that fancy rig, hell- I can't see 100 yards.
References :
Simpson and Weyerhauser land is good, the clearcuts are great areas to hunt.

I've always been given free access to Weyerhauser property, Simpson may be a bit different, but I've heard they are fairly decent also.
