A friend of mine is thinking about buying a deer rifle?

Between myself, my dad and another friend we have a very wide open variety of calibers for him to try. I had the .308 pop into my head today, because my .243 is so sweet, but with the .30 caliber there is more variety in loads. He most likely will only hunt what we call mule deer here in So. Cal or smaller, What do you think?

The .308 Winchester is a great choice. I also like the .25-06 Remington but you are right about the .30 caliber being available in a larger variety of loads.

I’m reloading 7mm weatherby mag and I would like to know which load is the best for hunting elk and mule deer.?

I’m kind of new to reloading and I just bought a RCBS rock chucker supreme kit and I need to know what will give me the best bullet for taking elk and mule deer at about 700 yards. Ps no I don’t mean remington 7mm mag I mean Weatherby’s big 7 made from a necked off 30 H&H magnum.

The trick to reloading is finding out which load fires best (accurate) out of your gun. It can be time consuming, but fun since you get to go to the range and shoot a bunch. Hopefully you have a good reloading manual to help you. You’ll have to find that perfect primer, case, powder, bullet combo that will shoot nice tight groups. Check reloading forums on the net and look up recipies for that load. That’ll give you a starting point. Be safe about it though. Some wackos post data that’ll put you over your max charge, so again, check your reloading book to make sure.

As for the bullet question, its hard to beat a Barnes TSX for knock down.

Whitetail/Mule Deer crossbreeds, can you hunt them and how do you tag it?

Unless you’re a geneticist, I would just go with whatever stronger physical characteristics are present. I doubt the game warden is going to have a fit if you have used judgment in a reasonable manner. Sort of like legally shooting a ‘doe’ and then finding out it has testes and no antlers. Beyond your control.

Has anyone out there ever hunted for Mule Deer in Section 12a West in AZ?

Yes, thanks I have Ellen. Just was wondering if anyone out there wanted to share any special spots. A friend was drawn.

Why don’t you check with the Game and Fish Department in Phoenix? They usually take "inventories" of the game in various areas so they can advise you of the populations of animals in a particular area.
I don’t know if they can advise you about how wary the animals in that particular area are though.
