Antelopes are, without question, one of the fastest game animals in North America. Known as the pronghorn antelope, or simply the pronghorn, they are a different form of challenge compared to deer and elk, although even novice hunters can find a high probability of success when hunting them.

As with any hunt, it is the wise hunter that attempts to learn all he can about the animal he is about to hunt, more so if they are used to hunting other animals. Pronghorn antelope, so called because of the forward pointing tines on their horns, are plains animals. They are well adapted for speed and are able to see long distances; this means they can spot a hunter further and escape faster than whitetail deer. They are also able to conserve the water in their bodies, and will not always be found near bodies of water. Also unlike whitetail deer, they are creatures of habit, often frequenting the same areas from day to day, unless they are merely passing through an area. Pronghorn can consume different forms of vegetation, but have a preference for flowers and fruit.

Related to the study of the animal, is the study of the hunting ground, or scouting. Scouting should take place sometime before the start of the hunting season, and the seasoned hunter knows that being there in person is much better than simply viewing even the best-made maps. Knowing the preferences of pronghorn, you should take the time to discover their feeding grounds, escape routes and patterns of behavior of the herd. During this time, you can also discover good locations to set up camp, rest sites and work areas, as well as routes to and from the areas you find antelope. In addition, scouting can give you the chance to spot possible trophy animals. It may help to have high-quality binoculars or scopes, both during scouting and for the actual hunt, so that you can somewhat negate the natural sight advantage of antelope.

Again, as pronghorn antelope are creatures of habit, it is often easier to create a plan for the hunt after a scouting the area. You will know, or at the very least, have a good idea, where the herd and any specific animals are at any part of the day. You should be able to set up a good ambush, taking advantage of their predictability. However, in case of any unexpected changes in the plan, like weather and so forth, you should be prepared to adapt to any situation.

Between myself, my dad and another friend we have a very wide open variety of calibers for him to try. I had the .308 pop into my head today, because my .243 is so sweet, but with the .30 caliber there is more variety in loads. He most likely will only hunt what we call mule deer here in So. Cal or smaller, What do you think?

The .308 Winchester is a great choice. I also like the .25-06 Remington but you are right about the .30 caliber being available in a larger variety of loads.
