what deer hunting rifle?

this is my 2nd year hunting deer and i want to get a rifle. i have been using a 12 gauge slug. i am looking at the Marlin XL7 in 308win and the Savage arms EDGE in 308 win or the Mosin Nagant Model 91/30. I like the mosin Nagant because it is cheap

I like the Savage, but I’d get it in the 110. If you’re between the Edge and the Marlin XL7, I’d go with the Marlin. .308 is a versatile cartridge with fairly mild recoil. You’ll be able to find relatively cheap ammo as it’s a military caliber and long-lived. The short action allows the bolt cycling to be a little easier than the .270 or other longer actions (.30-06 parent case cartridges as an example). The MN is a great beginner rifle and serviceable as a deer gun. But you’ll ring much more inherent accuracy out of the Marlin, have the durability of a synthetic stock, and the option of a stainless barrel. They’re commonly available for less than $400–a killer deal for a fine rifle.

Best Deer Hunting Rifle?

Hello, I live in Southern Michigan and I’m wondering what’s the best white tail deer hunting rifle is. This would be my first rifle hunting medium game, I had a Ruger 10/22 for four years now and I’ve hunt small game and used it a lot, now I’m interested in medium game and see how good deer taste. Here some charastics I’m looking for.

-Has to be chambered in .308
-Has to be reliable
-Has to be under or at $600

Thank you.
Yes, I’m going up North, what I meant was I live in the lower peninsula.
$640 would be fine, basically anything that’s $700 and above isn’t.

I was raised in Grand Rapids and hunted with a .308 Remington "up north" around Cadillac back when. MJ (as usual) gives you a great recommendation. I have a slightly different take on a great shooting, very durable rifle: the Savage 16/116 Weather Warrior. I know what kind of junk you can get for deer season weather at times. Freezing rain and snow melting on metal is a rifle’s enemy. The Weather Warrior is made for your climate. See http://www.google.com/products?q=savage+weather+warrior+308&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=lxo_TJK0NIT58Ab4-9S-Cw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CC8QrQQwAg for pricing; most under $650.

Deer rifles are sniper assault weapons and felons can purchase deer license

This is why hunting has to be abolished because of the danger to humans lives beside the extreme cruelty to our forest animals.

At least 600 felons were documented to buy sporting licenses, which may or may not involve the use of guns.

Its not against the law for felons to get gun-deer licenses, but it is a crime to use them.

Armed robbers and rapists were among those in the woods last year, creating possible tension and maybe violence.

Real Huntin’ / Mr. Perfect 2008 KY Deer Hunting Season

This hunt takes you along with me as I took the day off from behind the camera and put myself behind the Rifle. Hunting alone, as some of us need the peace at times and where Luck was on my side. I took a nice 8 point (143
” gross) in Kentucky. This is the recovery of MR. PERFECT. This buck has only 1/8″ deference from side to side.

Tip of the week: Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Stay all day during the rut. You never know when the one you’re looking for will show himself.

Hunt Hard & Hunt Safe!
Thanks for watching.

What is the best rifle for Deer hunting in NC?

Can’t decide what is better .308, 30-06, .270. I will be hunting deer in and around NC. please tell me why you think one is the best.

Any one of the three you mention would be an excellent caliber choice.
I prefer my Remington 700 in .270 Win. and use 130 grain bullets.

Basically, it comes down to personal preference.
All three calibers will get the job done efficiently as long as the hunter places his shot properly.

In my area some hunters run deer with dogs. A friend of mine who hunts this way prefers a semi-automatic 30-06.

Need a deer hunting rifle?

I am looking to get a rifle to deer hunt with and i am wanting to look online at them so i can get an idea of price range and price on a scope but i have noticed that when you are looking for a firearm it isnt as easy to look for on the web as it is to find other items. Is there a web site that i can go to to look at guns…. like an online gun store?? Also what gun would you recomend for deer hunting? I was told a Mosin Nagant would be a good one because it is cheap and a solid gun. What would you recemend?

So, you are asking a couple of questions here, so I’ll see if I can sort them out.

First, where can you look at guns? Well, a couple of places, for general information, there is a website http://world.guns.ru which has history, models, explanations such about a wide variety of different firearms. From there, you can got Wikipedia about specific firearms and there are some excellents posts there about different guns. Finally, from there, you can go to www.gunbroker,com or www.gunsamerica.com which are both on-line gun auction sites. If you purchase through either of these sites you need to work through an FFL for the transfer, but there are thousands of guns out there virtually all with photos. Of course, virtually every firearms manufacturer has their own website displaying their product. So you can always go out to those.

Regarding your second question about recommendation about a deer rifle. That is actually a tougher question than you might think. In most (but not all) states it is required that that bullet be at least .240 in in diameter to hunt deer. Generally, due to the cost of ammunition and the weight of rifle, most people consider 300 Win Mag about the most they would hunt deer with, unless they had some special constraint. Of course, there are people who are exceptions and are very successful hunters with stuff much larger and much smaller. In some states, Wisconsin for example, you can only hunt deer with a shotgun. So, any answer you get is going to have to be filtered by your exact circumstances.

However, I’ll make a couple of recommendations that are well proven and have taken thousands of deer. In no particular order.

First – a .30-30 lever action, the Winchester Model 94 is the classic, but Marlin and Browning make excellent lever guns in this caliber as well. Good to a 100 yards and plentiful in the used market. Tons of choices in ammo, so finding hunting rounds are pretty plentiful. Marlin will likely be the cheapest, although 94’s are more plentiful in the used market.

Second – A bolt action in 30-.06, .270 Winchester or .308. The Savage 110 with Accu-trigger is an excellent value choice and the accu-trigger may well be the best trigger on the market today. You are going to get responses arguing for less gun for deer (.243 Roberts being pretty popular) and more gun for range and versatility. (300 Win Mag, or 300 Weatherby Magnum) If you want either of those you can certainly take down deer with them, the 30-.06. 270 Winchester and the .308 are probably just the most common. (You can get the 110 in any of the calibers)

Third – A semi-auto rifle in 7.62×39 or 7.62×54. Now, there are some beautiful semi auto rifles in the calibers listed above (Browning BAR being a great example) but generally they are more expensive. In looking at a Mosin Nagant you are looking at a cheap rifle. So, 7.62×39 has energy and ballistic performance similar to a .30-.30 and is very popular in sporterized (or not) versions of the AK47 or the SKS. Either of these can be had pretty cheaply and if you find one of the Eastern European ones (vs. the Chinese) the quality tends to be better. Alternately, Ruger’s mini30 isn’t a bad deer gun and is in 7.62×39 and relatively plentiful in the used market.

Finally, a 12 gage shotgun, probably pump as they are cheaper. The venerable Winchester Model 870 shotgun in 12 gage has taken thousands of deer in Minnesota and Wisconsin at a minimum. Not too expensive, plentiful in the used market, can get versions which will easily handle slugs it has been one of the standbys for years. Again, there are semi-auto shotguns and nicer ones than this, but the 870 has more than withstood the test of time.

Good Luck,

Thinkingblade
